Teaching the Class - Perimeter of Compound Shapes

Conscience Alley

Today we used evidence from our Friend or Foe novel to decide whether we think David and Tucky should help the German airmen or not. We considered both sides of the argument and were very persuasive. Look at the photographs below to see us in action!

Measuring Perimeter - Practical
We have been learning how to calculate the perimeter of regular shapes this week. We have discussed when in life we may need to know how to calculate perimeter. We came up with the rule that for regular polygons (with sides of the same length) we can multiply the length of one side by the number of sides in total. For rectangles we realised that once we had a length and breadth measurement we could double these to find the total perimeter. We had an extra challenge on Friday. Not only did we have to measure the length and breadth of larger rectangles (the whiteboard and the playground), we also had the select the most appropriate piece of equipment to measure with. We could choose from a ruler, a tape measure, a trundle wheel or a metre stick. Have a look at our photographs to see what a great job we did!

Reality Vs Online - Digital Wellbeing & Online Safety

Today we discussed how not everything we see online is real and how influencers put up edited photographs on their pages and select only their ‘best’ moments to share online. We discussed as a class how this can make us feel inadequate and lonely. We want to be critical thinkers and examine carefully what we see online and not just accept that what we see is real. We came up with the motto- ‘Don’t compare your everyday to someone’s best day’. We examined some images which had been manipulated and tried to work out which one was the original and what had been changed. It was a great discussion. We also reiterated that we need to be careful that we do not give out personal information when we’re online. Please reinforce these messages at home.

Common and Proper Nouns
Today we learnt all about the difference between common and proper nouns. We loved playing ‘Stop the Bus’. Mrs Gilpin shouted out a letter and we had to think of proper nouns to go under the following headings- boy’s name, girl’s name, car and brand. We got very competitive and super fast towards the end. Remember proper nouns always take a capital letter!

Day 3

A day spent brushing up on our archery skills and wall climbing. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time at Shannaghmore and we have made memories here that will remain with us forever. It is with a great deal of fondness that we say goodbye to Shannaghmore. Although we must admit that we can’t wait to sleep in our own beds tonight! A huge thank you to all of the staff and instructors who made our time so enjoyable and memorable.

Day 2
What a fantastic Day 2! We climbed to new heights and literally threw ourselves into the deep end today. Wow! A lot of sleepy heads tonight. We have not only loved making memories with one another but we’ve also enjoyed learning more about ourselves. We understand the powerful effect of a positive attitude and the amazing things we are capable of. What a day!

We’ve had a great first day from an Adventure Walk in Tollymore Forest to a Night Line. Plenty of laughs and trying new things!
