The Lifecycle of a Butterfly! 🦋

We loved caring for our butterflies and watching their amazing lifecycle unfold before our eyes. We observed them grow from tiny eggs into hungry caterpillars before they formed their cocoons. After waiting patiently for two weeks, we were so excited to see beautiful butterflies emerge! We carefully looked after them, feeding them each day before releasing them into our school playground. We hope they lays lots more eggs so we can spot even more butterflies around our school in the future! To help us remember everything we learned, we created a butterfly lifecycle display in our classroom.

P1 Gosford Trip! 🌳

Superworm Science Experiment! 🪱
Today we became scientists and carried out a fun experiment to help superworm find his family! We mixed water and fairy liquid and poured it on the grass before jumping up and down to make the worms think it was raining. Soon enough, the worms wriggled up out of the soil! We carefully collected them and were delighted to reunite superworm with his family!

Introducing Subtraction ➖

Today we tried to pack a picnic for our trip to Gosford but our hungry parrot kept taking-away our fruit! We recorded how many pieces of fruit we had at the start, how many the parrot ate and how many we had left. We used the - and = symbols to record our understanding. Then some of us pretended to be the hungry parrot, we had so much fun recording the subtraction sums at our tables !  🦜🍎🍊🍌

World Around Us: Ladybirds

We have been learning all about ladybirds as part of our Minibeasts topic! 🐞

Numeracy: Addition with Numicon

We used Numicon to help us explore addition in a practical way. We counted the holes on each Numicon piece and combined the pieces to find the total. We enjoyed working with partners to solve the addition challenges and explain our thinking using mathematical language. ➕🟰

Numeracy: Introducing addition

We explored addition using ‘The P1 adding machine’ and natural materials during Forest School!

Numeracy: Ordering and sequencing numbers

We worked together to order the numerals 1-20. Then we closed our eyes and some of the numerals disappeared! We had to work out which were missing! 🔢

Numeracy: Recognising o’clock times

We developed our understanding of time through an outdoor numeracy lesson. We worked together to create a large clock, writing and placing the numerals in the correct positions. We then moved the hands to show different o’clock times and practised reading them. This practical activity supported our use of mathematics in real-life contexts and developed our mathematical language. ⏰

Literacy: ‘Hot Seating’ the Jolly Postman

We had lots of fun taking part in a ‘Hot Seating’ activity during our literacy lesson. We role-played the Jolly Postman to conclude our topic and enjoyed pretending to answer questions as the character. We asked the Jolly Postman “who”, “what”, “why” and “where” questions to find out more about his busy day delivering letters! We tried to listen carefully and give clear answers developing our talking and listening, confidence and oracy skills! 📮✉️
