Term 2
🚀🧑🚀 SPACE 🧑🚀🚀
Our new WAU topic is Space. We spent time discussing and recording what we already know about Space and what we want to find out.
PDMU
We watched the story ‘The Honest-to-Goodness Truth’ by Patricia McKissack and then worked in groups to think about and discuss when and if you should bluntly tell the truth or do it in a way that does not hurt the feelings of others.
OLLIE THE OWL FINANCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAMME
Kathy from the Bank of Ireland visited both P7 classes to make them aware of the importance of having a savings account. The pupils also took part in discussions about the origins of money and different currencies.
MADE TO MEASURE!
Primary Seven pupils used the measure app on the iPads to check their estimations of the length of different objects.
MEASURE CHALLENGE
P7H enjoyed trying out different measure challenges during their maths carousel group work. 📏📐
ENJOYING A TREAT ON PANCAKE TUESDAY
INTERNET SAFETY DAY
The pupils discussed the development of AI and how it could be used safely. They were then given different scenarios when AI was used and they had to discuss and decide if the scenario was OK or NOT OK.
🚢 TITANIC BELFAST 🚢
On Monday 2nd February the P7 classes set out to visit the Titanic Museum in Belfast. We had the opportunity to visit the slipways where Titanic was built, go on board the Nomadic which is the last surviving ship belonging to the White Star Line and have a guided tour of the Titanic Museum. The pupils all agreed that they really enjoyed their visit- especially the time in the shop before they boarded the bus to return to Richhill! 😀
A SPECIAL VISITOR!
Charlie’s Grandad, Mr Tomlinson, visited the P7 classes to talk about his job as a radio operator. He talked about Morse code and how it was developed and used with the invention of the Marconi radio. Mr Tomlinson linked his talk to our topic about Titanic and the experiences of the radio operators on board the ship- Harold Bride and Jack Phillips. We thoroughly enjoyed watching Mr Tomlinson demonstrating his skills at using Morse code before having a go ourselves!
STEM
The pupils in P7H worked in groups to design and make Titanic themed Jack-in-the-Boxes using pneumatics as a source of energy. They worked well together to be creative and develop their problem solving skills.
ALAN PEAT’S EXCITING SENTENCES
P7H work in groups to sort sentences about Titanic into different categories. Recognising and then using these different sentences in their own work helps to improve their writing in Literacy.
STEM
P7H were given the challenge to design and make a balloon jet using air as a source of energy. The balloon jet had to fly along a wire from Miss Herron’s desk to the window. The pupils worked in friendship groups. After a class discussion about TSPC each group decided on their group roles and started planning. Everyone really enjoyed the task and showed great perseverance tinkering with their designs to improve how far their balloon jet would fly.
ALAN PEAT’S 2 PAIR SENTENCES
As part of our work in literacy about the novel ‘Eye of the Wolf’, we worked in groups of four to think of adjectives which could be used to describe different environments from the point of view of Blue Wolf. P7H produced some brilliant work!
INVESTIGATING WHICH NETS WILL MAKE A CUBE.
AIR EXISTS!
As part of our topic on ‘Energy’ we are going to look at air as a source of energy but first we had to prove that air exists. We turned an empty jam jar with a paper towel inside upside down and submerged it in a basin of water. The paper towel didn’t get wet because the jam jar was full of air and the water didn’t get it. We then tried the same experiment with Sam B’s tie- fortunately it worked! 😀
TERRIFIC TANGRAMS
The pupils developed their spatial awareness a problem solving skills when they used a seven piece tangram to make animals.
MENTAL MATHS
P7H revise their mental maths skills using a ‘hundred square’. They practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, prime numbers, square and cubed numbers and square roots.
